This guide compares broad national planning estimates with published local and supplier-specific examples. Prices are separated into concrete-only, delivered, and installed scopes because those figures are not interchangeable. Current itemized quotes from suppliers serving the project address should control the final budget.

Concrete cost per yard: the short answer

For initial budgeting, standard ready-mix concrete commonly falls around $110–$175 per cubic yard before some fees. In newer, higher-cost, or supplier-specific examples, the rate may reach about $160–$195 per yard or more. One national estimate placed the 2025 average at $179.95 per cubic yard, with a broader range of $160–$195 or more. Treat that dated average as a planning benchmark—not a guaranteed 2026 price in your ZIP code—because location, mixture, order size, delivery, and project conditions affect the total. The first task is to identify the scope behind any price:

These prices cannot be compared fairly until you know what each quote includes. A concrete-only rate of $150 per yard could produce a higher invoice than a nominally higher delivered rate if the first supplier adds a large minimum purchase or delivery charge. Likewise, an installed contractor proposal is not directly comparable with a ready-mix supplier’s material quote.

Published estimates vary because they cover different places, dates, mixtures, customer categories, and fee structures. Local examples make the variation clear:

  • American Concrete’s price sheet, effective April 1, 2026, listed C.O.D. rates of $170 per yard for 2,500 PSI, $174 for 3,000 PSI, and $182 for 4,000 PSI. Review American Concrete’s dated pricing schedule.

  • Royal Concrete reports a broad Ohio range of $135–$200 per cubic yard, while acknowledging that delivery, labor, preparation, order size, mix, and access can change the total. Some figures on that contractor’s page use different scopes, so they should not be treated as a clean material-only state average.

These examples do not establish one universal national rate. They demonstrate why the most useful answer to “how much does a yard of concrete cost?” is a planning benchmark plus an itemized local quote.

Your actual invoice depends on:

  • Project location and distance from the batch plant
  • Required mixture and strength
  • Number of cubic yards ordered
  • Supplier minimums and short-load policies
  • Delivery date and arrival window
  • Site and road access
  • Unloading time
  • Additives or specialty requirements
  • Taxes and supplier-specific fees

A quoted base rate is therefore only the first layer of the budget.

Why one yard may cost much more than the advertised rate

The advertised per-yard rate is generally a variable material charge. Dispatching a truck also creates costs that do not decline in proportion to the number of yards delivered. A supplier may recover those costs through a delivery charge, short-load fee, minimum invoice, minimum purchase, or another pricing structure.

Those terms are not interchangeable:

  • A short-load fee may apply when the order is below a supplier’s preferred load size.
  • A delivery charge may apply per trip, outside an included radius, or below a quantity threshold.
  • A minimum invoice or purchase establishes the least amount the supplier will bill.
  • A waiting-time charge may apply after the included unloading period ends.
  • Some suppliers combine these mechanisms, while others use only one or allow one charge to replace another.

Do not automatically add every fee you find online. Ask the supplier which provisions apply to the specified quantity, address, mixture, and delivery date.

The most useful comparison metric for small orders is:

Effective delivered cost per yard = total invoice ÷ delivered cubic yards

Suppose two yards are advertised at $150 per yard. The material charge is $300. In one published Denver example, a $100 short-load fee raises the invoice to $400:

  • Concrete: 2 × $150 = $300
  • Short-load fee: $100
  • Total: $400
  • Effective delivered cost: $400 ÷ 2 = $200 per yard

A minimum invoice can produce a very different result. American Concrete’s April 2026 C.O.D. rate for 3,000 PSI concrete was $174 per yard, but its schedule also specified an $820 minimum purchase for four cubic yards or less. It listed an additional $85 delivery charge on deliveries under six yards, unless the delivery was needed to complete a full order. These are one supplier’s terms for a particular date and customer category—not national policies. Read the supplier’s minimum-purchase and delivery terms.

At the posted base rate, two yards of 3,000 PSI concrete would appear to cost $348. The minimum means the applicable starting invoice would not simply be $348. The buyer would still need to confirm whether delivery, tax, additives, and other charges were included in or added to that minimum.

A separate North Carolina example shows how high the effective unit cost can become. In February 2026, Rocket Concrete listed $726 before tax for two delivered yards of 3,000 PSI concrete in its service market. Before comparing advertised prices, ask each supplier:

  1. Is there a minimum invoice or minimum purchase?
  2. What quantity is considered a short load?
  3. Is the short-load charge assessed per yard, per truck, or through a minimum invoice?
  4. Is delivery included within a stated radius?
  5. Can a delivery charge and short-load fee both apply?
  6. Does the minimum replace any other fee?
  7. Are tax, fuel, environmental, or washout fees additional?
  8. How much unloading time is included?
  9. What happens if a second delivery is needed?
  10. How are fractional yards billed or rounded?

For a one- or two-yard order, those answers can matter more than a difference of several dollars in the advertised material rate.

Calculate how many cubic yards the project needs

Concrete is ordered by volume. One cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet.

For a rectangular slab, footing, pad, or similar shape, use:

Length in feet × width in feet × thickness in feet ÷ 27 = cubic yards

If thickness is measured in inches, use:

Length in feet × width in feet × thickness in inches ÷ 12 ÷ 27 = cubic yards

One cubic yard provides approximately the following coverage:

Worked example: 10-by-15-foot slab at 4 inches

Convert the thickness to feet:

  • 4 inches ÷ 12 = approximately 0.333 feet

Calculate the volume:

  • 10 feet × 15 feet × 0.333 feet = approximately 50 cubic feet
  • 50 cubic feet ÷ 27 = approximately 1.85 cubic yards

That is the geometric requirement before any allowance.

If a 10% planning allowance is selected:

  • 1.85 × 1.10 = approximately 2.04 cubic yards

The supplier may sell concrete in specified fractional-yard increments or round the order. Confirm available increments before placing it.

An allowance is not a substitute for accurate measurement. Check the excavation or forms at multiple locations, especially where the subgrade is uneven. A nominal 4-inch slab can consume more concrete when:

  • Low spots make portions of the slab deeper
  • Forms bow outward
  • The base elevation varies
  • Thickened edges or footings are present
  • Dimensions differ from the plans
  • Concrete is lost during placement

For an irregular layout, divide the project into rectangles or other manageable shapes, calculate each volume separately, and add the results. Keep isolated footings, steps, walls, grade beams, and thickened sections separate so they are not overlooked.

Most importantly, this calculation estimates quantity only. It does not determine:

  • Structurally appropriate thickness
  • Required concrete strength
  • Slump or mix design
  • Aggregate type or size
  • Reinforcement
  • Joint layout
  • Drainage or slope
  • Subbase requirements
  • Applicable code compliance

Obtain those specifications from the project plans, applicable requirements, manufacturer instructions where relevant, or an appropriate project professional. Ordering the correct volume of an unsuitable mixture does not produce a suitable completed project.

Cost examples for 1, 2, 5, and 10 cubic yards

The following table uses an explicitly assumed $150-per-yard planning rate. It is an illustrative rate within published planning ranges, not a current quote for any particular location.

These are base concrete charges only. They exclude delivery, minimum invoices, short-load charges, mix upgrades, admixtures, taxes, waiting time, pumping, placement, and installation.

Use this complete delivered-invoice formula:

Base concrete charge + all applicable delivery, short-load, minimum-invoice, mix, additive, tax, and supplier charges = delivered invoice

The phrase all applicable matters. Do not add a minimum, short-load fee, and delivery charge unless the supplier confirms that each one applies.

Then normalize the result:

Delivered invoice ÷ delivered yards = effective delivered cost per yard

For the earlier 10-by-15-foot slab, the estimated order with a 10% allowance is 2.04 cubic yards. At the assumed rate:

  • 2.04 × $150 = approximately $306

That $306 is only the illustrative base concrete charge. If the supplier applies a minimum bill, rounds the quantity, or adds a small-order charge, the delivered invoice could be considerably higher.

A standard ready-mix truck commonly carries approximately 8–10 cubic yards, although actual capacity and permissible load can vary. A supplier’s threshold for a “full load” or “short load” may not match the truck’s physical capacity. Billd describes standard ready-mix truck capacity as approximately 8–10 cubic yards.

Fixed costs explain why small orders often have the highest effective cost per yard. If a $100 delivery-related charge is spread across one yard, it adds $100 per yard. Spread across five yards, the same fixed charge adds $20 per yard.

That arithmetic does not mean every five- or ten-yard order receives the same rate, avoids every surcharge, or qualifies for identical terms. It only illustrates how a fixed fee affects unit cost.

Also consider the cost of getting the quantity wrong. Ordering too little could require a second truck and another small-order invoice. Ordering far too much can create handling and disposal problems. Accurate field measurements and a reasonable project-specific allowance are more useful than rounding up arbitrarily.

What changes the price of ready-mix concrete

Two suppliers can quote different totals for the same nominal number of yards because they may be pricing different mixtures, delivery conditions, schedules, and commercial risks. Organize the variables into four groups when reviewing a quote.

Concrete specification

The required concrete affects the base rate. Relevant variables can include:

  • Specified compressive strength, commonly expressed in PSI
  • Specialty mix design
  • Cementitious-material requirements
  • Aggregate type and size
  • Fibers
  • Integral color
  • Accelerators
  • Retarders
  • Water reducers or plasticizers
  • Other project-specified admixtures

American Concrete’s April 2026 schedule illustrates how one supplier priced these differences. Its C.O.D. base rate increased from $170 per yard for 2,500 PSI to $182 for 4,000 PSI. Listed additions included $8 per yard for small-stone concrete, $4 for residential fiber, $6.25 for commercial fiber, $2.50 for retarder, and $5.50 for superplasticizer.

Those amounts show how one dated supplier schedule was structured. They are not standard national add-on rates.

Do not select PSI, slump, aggregate, admixtures, fibers, or reinforcement solely because one option is cheaper. Obtain the required specification from the plans, applicable local requirements, manufacturer instructions where relevant, or the appropriate project professional.

Order size

Order quantity can affect:

  • The base rate offered to the customer
  • Eligibility for volume or account pricing
  • Whether a minimum invoice applies
  • Whether the order is treated as a short load
  • Whether more than one truck is needed
  • The risk and cost of a second delivery
  • The fractional-yard increment the supplier will sell

A homeowner paying C.O.D. may not qualify for the same rate as a contractor with an open account or a builder purchasing large annual volumes. When reviewing supplier price sheets, check the stated customer category instead of assuming that the lowest listed number applies.

A larger order can spread fixed dispatch and delivery costs over more yards, but it does not automatically qualify for the same unit rate, truck capacity, or fee treatment everywhere.

Delivery logistics

The delivered price may change based on:

  • Distance from the batch plant
  • Included delivery radius
  • Fuel or mileage charges
  • Truck access and turning space
  • Road or surface limitations
  • Placement location relative to the truck
  • Pumping requirements
  • Washout arrangements
  • Time needed to unload
  • Need for a second delivery
  • Returned or rejected concrete policies

Truck time deserves particular attention. In its April 2026 schedule, American Concrete allowed one hour to unload and then listed additional truck time at $75 per hour or $1.25 per minute. That is one supplier’s policy, not a national standard, but it demonstrates why the crew, forms, access route, and placement equipment should be ready before the truck arrives.

If the truck cannot reach the forms, the project may require a pump, conveyor, buggy, wheelbarrow crew, or another placement method. The ready-mix material rate does not cover those services unless they are expressly included.

Access problems can also create indirect costs. A truck may be unable or unwilling to enter a soft yard, narrow driveway, restricted road, steep grade, or location without adequate turning room. Discuss access with the supplier before delivery rather than assuming the truck can discharge beside the forms.

Scheduling and site conditions

Pricing and availability may also change with:

  • Region and local market conditions
  • Cement, aggregate, and fuel costs
  • Seasonal demand
  • Winter conditions
  • Weekend or holiday delivery
  • Requested arrival time
  • Supply constraints
  • Local taxes
  • Difficult access
  • Weather-related delays
  • Cancellation or rescheduling

A low base rate is not necessarily the lowest-cost option if the supplier is farther away, includes less unloading time, cannot meet the pour schedule, or has a less favorable cancellation policy. Compare the complete commercial terms, not just the first number quoted.

Concrete price versus the cost of a finished slab

A ready-mix price per cubic yard should not be treated as the cost of a completed slab unless the quote expressly includes installation. Concrete arriving at the discharge point is only one layer of the project budget.

A complete slab estimate may need separate amounts for:

  1. Concrete and delivery
  2. Demolition or excavation
  3. Hauling and disposal
  4. Grading
  5. Subbase material and compaction
  6. Forms
  7. Reinforcement
  8. Pumping or other placement equipment
  9. Placement labor
  10. Screeding and finishing
  11. Joints and edge work
  12. Curing-related work and protection
  13. Permits or inspections where applicable
  14. Taxes and supplier fees
  15. Sealing, staining, or optional treatments

One published benchmark estimates a professionally poured plain concrete slab at approximately $6.50–$10.50 per square foot. Decorative treatments such as stamping, staining, and special finishes can increase the project price. Published labor and installed-price guides frequently use inconsistent scopes. One estimate may include placement and basic finishing but exclude excavation and reinforcement. Another may include preparation, forms, cleanup, or disposal. Combining different scopes into one supposedly authoritative national range creates false precision.

Consider a 600-square-foot slab. The concrete quantity depends on thickness, but the material invoice alone says little about the completed-project cost. A site requiring demolition, exported soil, a compacted base, reinforcement, pumping, or difficult hand placement will cost more than an accessible site with completed preparation.

Decorative work widens the gap further. Those costs should not be inferred from a standard gray ready-mix rate.

When comparing contractor proposals, normalize them by:

  • Slab area
  • Thickness
  • Concrete specification
  • Preparation depth and subbase
  • Reinforcement
  • Formwork
  • Placement method
  • Finish
  • Joint work
  • Demolition and disposal
  • Curing-related work
  • Permits and tax

The cheapest total may simply include less work. A line-by-line comparison makes that difference visible.

Ready-mix versus bagged or volumetric concrete

Bagged concrete can avoid truck minimums, but it is not directly comparable with a supplier’s advertised per-yard rate. The useful comparison is the total cost of acquiring enough material, including pickup or delivery, equipment, labor, waste, and the practical demands of completing the pour.

If an 80-pound bag yields approximately 0.60 cubic feet, then:

  • One cubic yard = 27 cubic feet
  • 27 ÷ 0.60 = 45 bags

Always confirm the yield printed on the selected product. Bag sizes and yields differ, and waste or partial bags can change the actual purchase quantity.

Published estimates put the bagged-material equivalent at roughly $225–$400 per cubic yard before mixing labor, equipment, pickup or delivery, waste, tax, and tools. At a retail range of $6–$9 per 80-pound bag, 45 bags cost approximately $270–$405 before those additional expenses. Review the bag-yield, retail-price, and ready-mix comparison assumptions.

When bags may make sense

Bagged concrete may be practical for:

  • Fence or mailbox posts
  • Small repairs
  • A few isolated footings
  • Steps or curbs with limited volume
  • Very small pads
  • Sites that cannot accept a ready-mix truck
  • Work completed in separate small batches

Bags let the buyer purchase limited quantities without paying a truck minimum.

However, a cubic yard represented by approximately 45 80-pound bags involves substantial handling. The buyer must transport, stage, open, mix, place, and clean up after every batch. Mixer rental, water access, extension cords or fuel, store delivery, and helper labor can change the apparent savings.

When ready-mix may make sense

Ready-mix is often more practical for a larger continuous pour because the concrete arrives batched and can be discharged over a concentrated period. That does not guarantee it will be cheaper. A one- or two-yard order may be subject to a minimum invoice that outweighs the lower material rate.

Pour continuity also has value that is not captured by the shelf price of one bag. If a slab requires more material than a small crew can mix and place consistently, the logistics may favor truck delivery even when the invoice is higher.

Volumetric delivery

Volumetric delivery may be another small-order option in markets where it is available.

There is no defensible universal break-even volume for bags versus conventional or volumetric delivery. The result depends on:

  • Local bag prices
  • Actual bag yield
  • Truck minimums
  • Short-load policies
  • Delivery distance
  • Mixer and tool costs
  • Labor availability
  • Site access
  • Required pour continuity
  • The value assigned to the buyer’s time

Compare total delivered or acquired material cost, not one bag’s shelf price against a truck’s advertised base rate.

How to request and compare concrete quotes

A supplier can give a more useful quote when the project information is complete. Prepare the following before calling.

Do not ask only, “What is concrete per yard?” Instead, request the total for a defined quantity and specification delivered to a defined address on a likely date.

Ask the supplier to identify:

  • Base rate per cubic yard
  • Minimum invoice or minimum purchase
  • Short-load threshold and calculation
  • Delivery charge
  • Included delivery radius
  • Mileage outside that radius
  • Fuel or environmental fees
  • Sales tax

Request both the total expected invoice and the underlying fee schedule. Two suppliers may recover small-order costs differently, so matching fee names is less important than calculating the final amount.

For each quote, record:

Effective delivered cost per yard = quoted total invoice ÷ delivered quantity

Then verify that every quote uses the same quantity, mixture, delivery location, tax treatment, and unloading assumptions. A quote for 3,000 PSI concrete without fibers should not be compared directly with a differently specified mixture that includes an admixture.

Obtain multiple local quotes. National estimates can establish a budget range, but they cannot determine the current price for a particular ZIP code, batch plant, order size, or delivery date.

A planning allowance of approximately 5%–10% is commonly used for spillage, uneven conditions, and measurement uncertainty, although irregular work may need a project-specific allowance. Excessive overordering creates handling and disposal problems, while ordering too little can trigger an expensive second delivery. How many 80-pound bags of concrete make one cubic yard?

Approximately 45 80-pound bags make one cubic yard when each bag yields about 0.60 cubic feet:

27 cubic feet ÷ 0.60 cubic feet per bag = 45 bags

Does the price per cubic yard include delivery and labor?

Not necessarily. Some suppliers include delivery within a defined radius; others charge separately or apply a minimum invoice. A per-yard quote should not be assumed to include site preparation, forms, reinforcement, pumping, placement, finishing, demolition, permits, or cleanup.

How much extra concrete should I order?
