The table leaves fields unresolved where the seller does not provide dependable data. Do not fill those gaps with dimensions from a generic lumber chart. One retailer’s supplied catalog also contains a conflicting coverage figure on another listing, reinforcing the need to verify the current technical sheet rather than treating category-page data as a cut list.

Profile terminology also needs interpretation:

Calculate quantity and normalize the price

Begin with surface area, not board count.

For each wall:

Gross wall area = wall length × wall height

For a ceiling:

Gross ceiling area = ceiling length × ceiling width

Add all installation areas to obtain the gross project area. Then list doors, windows, beams, skylights, and other openings separately.

Do not automatically deduct every opening. Show both figures:

Net area = gross area − openings reasonably expected to reduce the order

For example, a 10-foot-long by 8-foot-high wall has a gross area of:

10 ft. × 8 ft. = 80 sq. ft.

Coverage from net face width

Convert area into installed board length using the verified net face:

Coverage per linear foot = net face width in inches ÷ 12

The seller-listed nominal 1x6 example has a verified 5.125-inch net face. Therefore:

5.125 ÷ 12 = 0.427 sq. ft. per linear foot, approximately

To cover 80 square feet before adding a project-specific allowance:

80 ÷ 0.427 = approximately 187.4 linear feet

This is a coverage calculation, not an order recommendation. The order still needs to account for supplied lengths, cutting pattern, defects, damage, package quantities, and seller rounding rules.

If a supplier publishes reliable square-foot coverage by board or package, that figure may be used instead. When published coverage conflicts with the stated dimensions—or when the board or package basis is missing—stop and ask the supplier to reconcile it.

Convert a linear-foot price to a square-foot price

Use:

Cost per square foot = price per linear foot ÷ square feet covered per linear foot

The documented rustic listing states a base price of $1.14 per linear foot, subject to change, and permits unusually broad defects. If a board at that price had the separately documented 5.125-inch net face, the arithmetic would be:

$1.14 ÷ 0.427 = approximately $2.67 per sq. ft.

That is a cross-source arithmetic illustration, not a quote for a configured product. It excludes extra material, finish, freight, tax, trim, samples, labor, and accessories. The seller’s actual $1.14-per-linear-foot listing does not publish the net face needed to normalize its own coverage.

Another seller advertises hand-selected knotty pine starting at $2.86 per square foot. That figure cannot be compared directly with the rustic linear-foot price until coverage, grade, profile, end matching, supplied lengths, minimum quantity, finish, and freight are aligned.

Exclude catalog figures with no stated price unit from normalization. Likewise, do not assign a price to store-specific inventory until the applicable location, unit, and stock status are confirmed.

Set an allowance for the actual project

There is no universal waste percentage for pine tongue-and-groove. Build the allowance from the conditions present in the job:

  • Fixed, mixed, or random supplied lengths
  • Wall or ceiling dimensions
  • Diagonal or other high-cut patterns
  • Required end-joint staggering
  • Doors, windows, beams, and penetrations
  • Reusability of offcuts
  • Square-ended versus end-matched stock
